Starter Motor - The Heart of the Ignition System . A starter motor, usually an electric motor, converts electrical energy from the battery into mechanical energy to crank the engine and start the combustion process. It uses a small gear (pinion) that meshes with a larger gear (flywheel) on the engine, causing the flywheel and ultimately the crankshaft to turn the engine. 1. Activation: When the ignition key is turned (or the start button is pressed), a signal is sent to the starter solenoid. 2. Solenoid engagement: The solenoid, a type of electromagnet, engages and pushes the starter pinion gear forward to engage the flywheel. 3. Power transmission: A 4. Engine Starter: The electric motor spins and turns the pinion gear, which in turn spins the flywheel. This rotation is what starts the internal combustion process in the engine. 5. Getting Rid of the Flywheel Once the engine starts and runs automatically, there is no need for a starter motor. The starter disengages the pinion from the flywheel and the starter motor does not work.
